Great Gypsy Soul, the star-studded album paying tribute to late Deep Purple guitarist Tommy Bolin will be released on Monday.  The record features such famous musicians as Peter Frampton, Aerosmith‘s Brad Whitford, Deep Purple‘s Steve Morse, ex-Purple bassist/singer Glenn Hughes, Toto‘s Steve Lukather and Allman Brothers Band guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks performing alongside vocal and guitar outtakes from Bolin’s 1975 solo effort, Teaser.  The project was put together by Haynes and veteran producer Greg Hampton.

Great Gypsy Soul will be available as a single CD and as a deluxe two-CD set with extra tracks.  In addition, an MP3 version of the single-disc version will be sold one day early — on Sunday, March 25 — exclusively at Amazon.com for the special price of $3.99.  Check out audio samples of all of the tracks on the album at 429Records.com.

Bolin was an influential hard-rock/jazz-fusion guitarist who served as Joe Walsh‘s replacement in The James Gang in 1973 and ’74 before joining Deep Purple the following year.  He also recorded a couple of acclaimed solo albums — Teaser and 1976′s Private Eyes — before his tragic death from a drug overdose in December 1976 at age 25.
