SANFORD–From South Horner Boulevard to Cox Maddox Road to Carthage Street, large plumes of thick, black smoke were observed shortly after 11 AM Tuesday. The smoke was from an explosion at Noble Oil Company on Clyde Rhyne Drive in the Lee County Industrial Park. At least two workers were injured and were transported by air helicopter to burn facilities in Chapel Hill. Emergency personnel said it appears there was an over-pressurized oil tank and its top blew off. Exact cause has not been determined and is under investigation. Several surrounding industrial plants were evacuated following the explosion.
