Last year, a line of Grateful Dead-themed wines was introduced, and now the band is collaborating with the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery to create a beer inspired by the legendary group. The brew, titled American Beauty, will be a strong pale ale that includes U.S.-grown hops and barley, as well as an as-yet-undetermined ingredient that the Dead is asking its faithful followers to help choose.
The band and the brewing company have launched a campaign where fans can submit their suggestions for an ingredient that has an interesting story connecting it to the Dead, as well as a flavor that fits well with the beer. Participants must be at least 21 years old, and have until December 31 to enter their submissions.
The winning ingredient will be chosen by a panel of representatives from the Grateful Dead camp and Dogfish Head, and is expected to be announced in the spring or early summer of 2013. The person responsible for the winning suggestion will be invited to the Dogfish Head brewpub in Rehoboth, Delaware, to taste test American Beauty ale.
In honor of the new brew, The Grateful Dead currently is streaming its classic 1970 album, American Beauty, online for free at Dead.net.
