The producers of Love and Mercy: The Lives, Times and Music of Brian Wilson, the upcoming theatrical film about the eccentric Beach Boys mastermind, have hired young actors to portray two of Wilson’s band mates. Variety reports that Brett Davern will play Brian’s late brother Carl, while Graham Rogers has been cast as Al Jardine.
Davern is perhaps best known for his role as Jake Rosetti in the MTV series Awkward, while Rogers stars as Danny Matheson in NBC’s Revolution.
As previously reported, Love and Mercy will feature John Cusack as an older Brian, while Paul Dano will portray the young Wilson. The film will focus on Wilson’s early years with The Beach Boys in the 1960s, his struggle with mental illness and his departure from the group.
Other reported castings include Paul Giamatti as Brian’s Svengali-like therapist Eugene Landy; Elizabeth Banks as Wilson’s current wife, Melinda; and actor/singer Max Schneider as his longtime songwriting collaborator Van Dyke Parks.
Love and Mercy is being directed by Bill Pohlad, while Oscar-nominated screenwriter Oren Moverman wrote the script and is also one of the executive producers.
