Phish has a long tradition of covering entire albums during their Halloween concerts, and now the popular jam band’s lead singer and guitarist, Trey Anastasio, has revealed that he’d love to perform Genesis‘ 1974 release The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway with its former frontman, Peter Gabriel, at this year’s show.
“I’m such a big fan of Peter Gabriel, I can’t even begin to tell you,” Anastasio tells Rolling Stone. “If he wanted to [perform The Lamb] with us, I would do it…that album had a huge effect on me, and [Phish drummer] Jon Fishman as well. I spent most of my high school years in a dark closet with headphones on listening to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.”
Anastasio, who inducted Genesis into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, extended an invitation to Gabriel to join the band on stage once before without success, but he’s hoping that the singer will take him up on his offer for this year’s Halloween concert at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
“I can play that album in my sleep, but we’ll only do it if [Gabriel] does it with us,” he notes. “Peter Gabriel, if you want to do The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway with us this Halloween, we’re your band. You heard it here first.”
