Gene Simmons is set to return to TV thanks to cable network AXS TV, which has licensed all seven seasons of the Gene Simmons Family Jewels reality series. The KISS singer/bassist says he’s excited to bring the series — which centers on his now-wife Shannon Tweed and their two children, Nick and Sophie Simmons — back to cable, especially since the show helped his family tremendously the first time around when it aired on A&E, starting in 2006.

“Well it’s exciting for me because Nick and Sophie, especially, were pre-teens when it started filming so they get a chance to kind of go back and say, ‘Ohh,’” Simmons tells ABC News Radio.  “But because of the show, both Nick and Sophie have all kinds of careers.  Nick just came back from London where he acted in something I’m not allowed to talk about, but you’ll be amazed.  Sophie and Shannon are doing [another] reality show.  In other words, everything for our family came about because of the show.”

Gene Simmons Family Jewels gives a behind-the-scenes look into the lifestyle of the rocker and his clan.  It also helps debunks misconceptions about his life in that it may not be all about rock ‘n’ roll, Gene says.

“People tend to judge a book by their cover.  You know, [I'm] that guy who sticks his tongue out and stuff, who loves farm animals.  He’s this.  He’s that,” the 64-year-old explains.  ”The show is what it is.  You get to see behind the curtain.  I’m actually straight, although it’s OK if you’re not.  I’ve never been high or drunk in my life, although people believe I have — but that’s just a personal choice.”

He adds, “The family I’m proud to be part of is actually pretty normal.”

The series also centers on his relationship with his longtime partner Shannon.  Although the two just renewed their wedding vows last week in Hawaii, on Family Jewels, viewers see Gene struggle with the decision to marry.

“I was always scared of it.  I never wanted anybody to tell me what to do and all that stuff.  I was afraid I would turn into my father,” the rock star admits to ABC News Radio.  “My father left us when I was about six or seven and I always thought it was marriage that made him leave, and I had never wanted to get married.  So I stayed together with Shannon 29 years before we decided to get married.”

Gene credits growing older as the reason he eventually tied the knot.  “After the kids grew up I went, ‘You know what?  I think this girl is serious. I think she likes me,’” he notes.  “At some point, we’re all going to be on our death bed and the question comes up, ‘Who do you want around you?’”

AXS TV will air back-to-back episodes of Gene Simmons Family Jewels on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET, starting tonight, October 3.
