    US Supreme Court to Hear Gay Marriage Cases

    (WASHINGTON) — The U.S. Supreme Court announced Friday it will hear challenges to California’s Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act. “Prop 8″ enshrines a ban on gay marriage in the state constitution and was overturned by federal courts. A divided three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in February struck it down, ruling that it “serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California and to officially reclassify their relationship and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.” Supporters of Prop 8… Read more

    Deadly NYC Bus Crash: Driver Found Not Guilty of Manslaughter

    (NEW YORK) — A casino bus driver has largely skirted criminal responsibility for last year’s deadly bus crash in New York City. The driver, Ophadell Williams, was returning from a trip to a Connecticut casino in March 2011, when he crashed into a pole, shearing off the roof of the bus. Fifteen people were killed in the accident in the Bronx in New York City. Williams was also cleared in all counts of criminally negligent homicide and assault charges.  He was convicted of one count of driving without a license.     An eclectic variety of music stars, including Keith Richards, Patti Smith and Todd Rundgren, have contributed to a new compilation of traditional sea-themed tunes inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys is a sequel to a similarly named 2006 collection of tunes produced by Hal Willner and executive produced by Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean series director Gore Verbinski.  The two-CD set, which features 36 tracks, will be released on February 19.     Man Tells Cops Alleged Prostitute Owed Him 10 More Minutes

    (OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine) — A New Hampshire man has been arrested and charged with engaging a prostitute after he phoned police to complain that the woman had shorted him 10 minutes of their prearranged session, officials say. Scott Pipher, 34, was charged Nov. 14, police said this week. Investigators in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, have been working on the case since Pipher placed the call March 25, and have also arrested the alleged prostitute, Sgt.
